Your First Year in Business Will Be a Bitch

No one prepares you for that first year in business. They really don’t. Your first year in business is going to be rough. It’s going to be very, very rough. I can’t even begin to tell you how crazy it will be.

I’m going to discuss the first thing you should look out for in your first year. The first thing you should know, is you’re going to fuck up. I’m not saying just a little bit, but a lot.

It’s part of how you’ll grow as a business owner. When you first start, you’ve got mojo. Your mojo is hustle, it’s sweat, it’s shine. It’s grind. You’re moving nothing to something. You’re out there making it happen.

You’re taking a concept, a product or a service and you’re saying, “Hey world…I want you to be a part of it.”

And it works. And it starts working better and better. Then one day you realize, that this is something real. This is something cool. It’s like giving birth. It’s the closest thing a male will come to it. It’s going to put some hair on your chest.

There’s so many things that are going to come to your during that first formation. When I went to get my business license, I went to the website. I did everything I thought was correct, right? I thought that after I went on the site and paid my $138 that I was going to come out with a business license. Little did I know that this was going to be a 3-week process.

We had signed a lease. We had money going out. We had product in the place, but we could not open.

We were able to make Craigslist sales, but it was still kind of worrisome. We thought about what they might do if they caught us.

You are trying to make money, maintain and get your thing going. It can be a problem.

Now. Let’s just say you were an employee and you’re going through all this stuff at once, like the job stress, the personal relationship stress and if you have kids, the kid stress? It can be a lot. That’s why many people just give up.

Many people think it will be much easier than it is. I’m going to give you some stuff that happened to me. I had five business failures before I was out of the military.

I was demoralized. I was depressed. I thought, none of this shit works. I didn’t realize it wasn’t supposed to work because I didn’t know how to do it.

There’s no shame in being ignorant, but it should be a sin to remain ignorant.

That’s one of the things I didn’t do. I kept pushing. I kept pushing. I kept learning. I kept changing things up. I kept looking at ways to make things better and I grew.

But, I’m going to give you some stuff from the more successful businesses.

I didn’t know what to do when you opened up a store. I did what I thought was correct. I went and I looked at the retail spot. I sat out there in my car and gaged the traffic a few times a week. It got a lot of traffic.

The road was super, super busy. What I didn’t know was that as people came down the road, the store was practically invisible. Nobody was able to really see it because they came down the hill and they were coming to a busy light with a lot of cars. You literally had to crank your head sideways. I had no clue.

We had to do all kinds of stuff to get people to come into the store. It was just insane.

I remember one time when there was something happening in the store and I could not put product in at the time, so I unloaded stuff in a row out in front of the store. I decided to tag it there, then put it back in the store when I could.

Little did I know that putting that stuff in the parking lot in front of the store was one of the biggest things I could do. That day was the first day we made rent in sales.

This is where it gets really stupid. It turns out you could only put stuff on the sidewalk. You couldn’t get much stuff on the sidewalk. Then neighbors would complain.

We just pushed it. We weren’t making money any other way. Then I figured out some stuff to increase Craigslist sales and stopped putting the furniture out in front of the store.

Another thing to think about is about your business license. If you don’t have an accountant, get one right away.

If you have a LLC business license set up as a single member LLC, it will be treated like a sole proprietorship.  The only way to stop this from happening is for you to fill out some forms within the first few days after you form an LLC. Otherwise, you will be hit with a 35% tax plus 20% self-employment tax.

Now, that’s never happened to me. But I know people it happened to. It’s rough.

Get yourself an accountant. Find an accountant who works with people in your industry.

What can happen to you depends on who you are selling to a lot of the time. If you are selling business to business, there is a lot of fuckery there.

When you are selling business to business and you don’t know how to navigate getting a deposit and they want you to operate on a purchase order, you could literally be signing the death certificate for your business. When you get a large order for 80K to 200K using a purchase order, then it could be 60 to 90 days before you get paid. Many people don’t pay on time. So, you’re scrambling while you wait to get paid.

You’ll spend one-third of your time getting business. You’ll spend one-third of your time doing business. You’ll spend one-third of your time trying to get paid. That’s why all of the bigger companies have Accounts Receivable departments.

What I learned was not to do business with purchase orders. One bad month when people don’t pay, could put you out of business.

Part of the reason the first year is so rough is because you don’t know what you’re doing. There are just so many variables. I’m going to give you an example of something that happened to a friend. He had a great business plan, tons of cash and was all set up. Everything was going well. Then the regulatory environment changed. The law was changed. That cash went away fast. He was in the healthcare industry. He was out of business overnight.

Online, you can get in trouble with a Google penalty. They can change the algorithm and the next thing you know, 70% of your traffic is gone. When that happens, what are you going to do? You have to hustle on the fly.

Another thing people won’t tell you about your first year in business is that your idea could be perfect, but it’s going to take society a year or three or five to find you. You’ve got to keep doing it.

It’s a struggle. It’s going to take time. The first 2 or 3 years are going to be a bitch. If you can hang on, you’ll make more money on one day than you did in a year.

As you know, Snapchat was just sold for $24 billion or something like that. But they haven’t made any money. Many people are doing Amazon FBA the same way. They’re scaling it up, selling stuff super, super cheap. But in terms of profit, it’s not really doing that well.

I had someone I was helping out this weekend who got themselves into a situation by building a company first and focusing on profitability last, which is always crazy to me. A lot of people have been talking about Snapchat.

As you know, Snapchat has not made a profit, which could work out for them. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. Historically, I’ll speak from my experience. Everything that I did that did not make a profit, failed. Businesses 1-5 failed for me. Everything after that did make a profit.

Here’s the thing. You’ve got to chase service first. You’ve got to find a group of people who need what you’ve got to sell and find them first. You also have to have some profits. One of the things people do is give away their stuff at first, just to get started. That can create some problems.

Amazon did not make a profit for a long time. They made a lot of money for years and they chose not to turn it into profit because they wanted to grow the company.

Even though Amazon made money, they did not want to liquidate money as profit and pay taxes. They chose to put it back into the company to grow the asset, which is the business.

There are many people who are not playing Amazon’s game, because they’re not making the money.

But, that’s the only thing you like to do with her. You don’t want to hang out. You don’t want to have dinner with her. You don’t want to talk to her. At some point, that shit’s going to get old. That’s how some people pick their business. They’ll get something sexy and there’s only one thing they like about it.

Essentially, you have to create something you enjoy. I don’t have to take a vacation away from it to enjoy life.

Question: How do you pick something?

Answer: It depends on where you are in the country. It depends on what you’re doing.

Question: In your opinion, what internet business is best to scale?

Answer: One that you fully appreciate and respect. If you love Twitter, you can win on Twitter. If you love Instagram, you can win on Instagram. If you love Facebook, you can win on Facebook.

It’s not so much the platform or the business, it’s the person on the platform or business. I like YouTube. It works for me.

There are so many ways to make money if you’re open to making money.

This is something I want you guys to understand. There’s some 25-year old guy who’s selling t-shirts, making $1 million per month. He’s not on social media. He’s not on Instagram. He’s not putting up quotes. He’s not standing next to his plane, because right now he’s working his ass is at work.

I can speak to the Upscale Garage Sale business. At that time, I didn’t have time for YouTube. We were very busy buying units and selling units.

Question: Did you think you were going to make it before the numbers supported the evidence?

Answer: I really didn’t know if this shit was going to work. I used to work in the hospital, right? I would see a lot of people who regretted the stuff they never did. I hear that over and over again. So, that was my focus. It wasn’t so much I knew I was going to win. I knew I was going to try it. So, I didn’t want to live with that regret. It just ate people up.

Question: What is your idea about choosing the sex industry to become an entrepreneur?

Answer: Fine, if that’s your thing and you can deal with the moral judgment that is coming, and there will be moral judgment coming! Do what you want.

It’s good to remember that only 8-9% of all commerce is done online. By the time you learn online sales, you could have built a million-dollar business out here. Why do you think I started Mack Daddy Media, which is a media agency? Essentially, I plan to do a lot of business locally.

Are You Chasing Internet Fame or Money?

This is a summary of this videoHey, I’ve got a question for you. Are you chasing money or are you chasing fame? There seems to be some confusion about that.

A lot of people are chasing fame. They think they’re chasing money, but they’re chasing fame.

This is how I can tell if you’re one of them. The internet is in a constant state of evolution. Each year it changes. Sometimes it changes monthly. And if you’re on the old-school method of getting a bunch of followers and then pitching to them, more than likely, you are chasing fame.

If you’re trying every new App, being on every new platform and you’ve got yourself scattered, you’re feeling stressed. If you’re still not making money, then it’s more than likely you’re chasing fame.

There are a few things you can do to make a big difference in your online business, and you can start today. One of the things is picking some kind of discipline, some kind of topic.

You can make money from a website. You can make money from a YouTube channel. You can make money from a podcast. You can make money from a Facebook page. You can make money from a Facebook group.

There’s a lot of different ways you can make money online. That’s part of the reason people struggle, and that’s part of the reason people get into chasing fame.

It looks like they’re chasing money. I’m over here tweeting and on Instagram. I’m doing all of this stuff. But, if you’ve been doing this a year and you’re barely making any money, or you’re not making any money at all, you’re hustling backward. You’re chasing fame and you don’t even know it.

There’s something you should chase before you chase money. You should chase happiness first, and then chase money. Big difference. There’s a lot of people who have money and they’re not happy.

The internet is so huge. There are so many people. There are so many topics. There are so many genres. You need to become good in one place and dominate it.

I’ll give you an example of something I did last year. I put together this package. I sold 450 people on that program. That’s not a lot of people. It was from an email list of 500 people, which means a 90% conversion rate. I did $70,000 in 10 weeks.

What I learned from that experiment was about how crucial targeting is in business. If your marketing is highly targeted and you have the right people on your list, it is easy to make money.

But let’s get back to the part before easy. You’ve got to have the right product. You’ve got to have the right people. You’ve got to have the right list.

These three things are crucial. What I used to do, and many of you still do, is to create a product first; then find an audience. That’s hustling backwards. It works. People have made a lot of money doing that.

But, what you should do, is to focus on the marketplace. You should focus on the audience first. That’s going to take some time, which is usually what causes some problems. You’ll get someone who has got to make money, right fucking now.

When you have to make money right now, there’s no time for introspection. There’s no time for research. There’s just no time.

You’re putting yourself in a bad position when you have to make money right now.

So, let’s clear up something. If you’re broke and you’ve been laid off, the first thing you’ve got to do is get yourself a job. Get a part-time job, a hustle with Uber. A hustle with Lyft. Something.

Get yourself a job, and this is why.

When you have to make money and you’re trying to hustle and don’t have hustle skills, the desperation is written all over your face.

You’re trying so hard and you’re putting in so much effort, it is easy for you to burn out. It is easy to become demoralized, to lose your mind.

If you are that broke and that miserable and you’re sleeping on a friend’s sofa, get a job. Then prepare to have that job for 1, 2, 3, 4 years while you hustle on the side. This is the truth of the matter. If you were good enough to just come off that couch and start hustling and making it in 30, 60 or 90 days, your ass would have never landed on that couch. Tough love. I know it’s true. So, think about that.

So how do you start to chase money, step by step?

Step 1: Pick something you want to focus on. Focus on that one thing for a minimum of 30-90 days.  To really be better off, you should probably focus on one thing for six months.

Now, this is the rule before you start adding something else. You want to make $10K before you add something else. If you make 10K and you dedicate yourself to one thing, then there’s a process that comes from that. There are things you learn. Once you have the foundation together, then you can add something else and make $20K. Then you can add something else and make $30K.

Step 2: Go back over what you do each week. If you’re not making any money, ask yourself why. Are the things you’re doing profit-making activities?

I had this client who was spending 80% of their time on non-profit making activities. So, when I jumped in, I got rid of 70% of that stuff that wasn’t working. Profitability improved in 90 days, tenfold, because they focused on their time.

Step 3: What are money-making activities? They are things that generate sales. How do you get to the sale? You must have a product or service. You must have marketing that lets people know you have a product or service. Then, you must establish trust. That’s it in a nutshell.

How do you do this? You have a blog, a YouTube channel, a podcast. These are what I call traffic drivers. It’s going to take time, unless you have a lot of money.

The reality is that anyone, in my estimate, can start a business that creates a livable income of $50K a year in 6 to 24 months from scratch.  But, you will be hustling your face off.

This is a summary of this video.We’re going to talk about the birth of a company. I’ve had some really interesting challenges hiring new people. It’s been really, really crazy. I read a lot of articles about millennials, but I didn’t know what people were talking about until I got into the fray. An example of what happened is that I interviewed someone. I thought it went really well. Then, I tried to contact them after they left to get their information, and there was no response. I sent an email, no response. This is very common. There’s a lack of communication and manners.So, today, there are a lot of things I’m going to do to document the birth of a company. There is Hustler’s Kung Fu which needs to be changed up. That’s one of the jobs that’s going to happen. Then, there’s Mack Daddy Media which is the video marketing consulting arm of the business. I can’t do both by myself or with a virtual assistant (VA).

I need more people. It’s very different than most businesses.

So, I’m explaining this to people and we’re having conversations. Then, I realized I had to go back to the “Old Glendon” in terms of hiring people. In my storage auction business, when someone came in the warehouse and they wanted to load trucks, I would have a little test for them. I would ask them; how would you load this truck? Either they could do it or they couldn’t do it. I’d have four people doing the job as a test. I’d pay them. It’s worth it to pay the money to find out if they can do the job now versus later.So that’s what I’m doing. As I am going through this process of using carbon life forms, that’s what I’m going to do. You’ll get to see that.

I’m going to flip the script and build this consulting business the way I want to build it, plus bring in some consulting clients. The challenge of hiring people is what keeps many companies small. This is what keeps companies from growing. This is what keeps your money down.So, we’ll document that journey. Everybody has this thing they want to do. If you work for Mack Daddy Media, you’re going to have to do 3 or 4 different things. If you ever get the opportunity to go to the BMW factory in Greenville, South Carolina, it is worth it from a management standpoint alone. Everybody that works there can do 4 things. They can work on 4 different lines. So, what happens when a new line comes in, you always have people with skill sets you need on hand.

When you are hiring, you definitely have people that don’t want to do that. They want to do their own thing.

Here’s the issue. I had a young lady the other day who said what I was offering was not enough. It kind of blew my mind. Now, I’m going to give you the breakdown. It was $14.95 an hour plus commission. Now, what I am going to have to do is train someone. That means I am going to be working harder than I’m working now. So, I am not going to pay top shelf and also work harder. That makes no sense to me. Plus, if they sell some stuff, they’re going to make way more than their base pay. I have a friend who is a Human Resource Manager and another friend who is a recruiter. They both said the same thing about my situation. They said, applicants don’t see the commission, that they only see the base. That means they only want to come in and do the minimum.

It’s such a great opportunity, and they don’t see it. There aren’t a lot of people locally who can build a YouTube channel and make a million dollars. This is going to be a physical company. What I’m going to do is bring them into the office and train them on how to do video. I’m going to need a staff to do that. There’s a lot of people out there that are hungry. I’ve just got to find them.

I just hired a cleaning lady. She brought her daughter with her and they cleaned my house like it was their own. I am going to aim towards immigrants when hiring from now on. They will put in the work. Whereas, a lot of Americans don’t want to work. They want to go on vacations. They want a 4-hour work week. I think a lot of people are being misled. A lot of people are seriously fucking up their futures.Here’s the thing with web people. You need to have core skills.

I’m a web guy. I make all of my money on the web. A lot of these skills that are so valuable now, will change. Someone’s going to come along with an “app” or some new technology and web workers are not going to be able to get any work if they don’t have other core skills. It is better to have core skills.

I can do video. I can do video editing. I can do script writing. I can do copywriting. I can write books. I know how to sell physical products from cars to million dollar furniture deals. I can do all of these things well enough to make money. Am I the best ever? No… But if I had to make a living from each one, I could.

My new thing is to get people in with good personalities and train them. Video marketing is relatively new. If you become good at video marketing, there is a lot of money in it. There isn’t much competition locally. To create a video that actually makes money is different than simply creating videos for entertainment or other reasons. A lot of people who don’t live in Atlanta check out the jobs here. I’m not going to hire out-of-state. Let me tell you why I am not going to do that. If I hire them and they uproot their family and move here and they turn out to be bad, I’ve got to fire them. I don’t want to deal with that. If I fire someone locally, they’ve got their family and friends close. They have a support system.

Question: Do you observe body language when hiring?

Answer: Big time.

For the folks going to be on YouTube, they have to make a video on their phone. If they can’t do that, then they can’t do this. A lot of people can’t do it. Video is a hard animal. If you can get good in video, you can write your own ticket.

There is so much opportunity in this business. To grow, you’re going to need 4 skills.

Number 1: You need to know how to sell.

Number 2: You need to learn how to market

Number 3: You need to learn how to build content.

Number 4: You need to learn how to build teams.

Let’s Talk about Money – The Real Reason You Are Broke – Make Money After You Know

This is a summary of this video Let’s talk about money. One of the reasons you don’t have the money you want is because you believe that in order for you to get money, somebody else must lose money. It’s a very powerful concept when you think about it.How does a country generate wealth? The answer is by creating new stuff. For example, let’s say there were only 8 million cars and the factories were closed. After the Zombie apocalypse, the factories weren’t rebuilt yet. So, we’d be trading these cars. Now that could make some money because cars would be a scarce commodity, but it’s not adding to the overall national production. Nothing is being made.

If you don’t have the money you want in your life, I want you to look at your service. How much are you putting out? How many folks are you serving?

Going back to my storage auction days, that’s like half a decade now, we are getting to a critical point. I looked at when we started making money. It was all about service. As we increased our service, we increased our sales. We increased the number of distribution channels and we increased our money. There are many people out there, who by virtue of fear, are trying not to put that much out. But, they want to get a lot back. It is real common with people in resale, because once you get that first hit, it’s like a drug. You buy something for $2, maybe $50 and then you turn around and sell it for $2000 or $3000. People keep chasing that hit over and over again.

Looking for market inefficiencies is one thing in building your business because the market is very inefficient. But chasing that “high” is what makes people who are otherwise pretty well off get into the thrift business. It’s a modern-day treasure hunt. Finding something at a very low price that you know has value, that is a wonderful way to make a living. But, it has limitations. The reasons are because for you to continue to make money in this way, you must find people who have less information than you have. That window is getting smaller and smaller.

Our country went through a period of extreme lack to a period of extreme abundance. A lot of people think that because they grew up in abundance, they should stay that way. We have peaked. This is as good as it’s going to get. Unless you increase your service to fellow human beings and create your own economy, then your standard of living has no ceiling. It’s a different money tree than someone who works in a job. Things are changing. Name 100 people you know in your town that could pony up $2000 if they had too. There will be some that can, but most won’t be able to. If you don’t have $2000 in cash, you have a negative net worth, which means your liabilities are greater than your cash on hand, which makes you poor. How many of those people could not go to work for 3 months without bad shit happening? I’m talking about foreclosure, repossession of vehicles and no food on the table.

The thing is you don’t have to be rich to pull off not working for three months if you have your finances in order and you understand business. You don’t have to be rich to do that. You just have to have:

  1. Limited outgo
  2. Cash reserves
  3. Income coming in that is not dependent on you going to a job and trading your time for money.

If you don’t have the money you want, you have to examine your thought process about money. I have always looked at money from a spiritual standpoint. I’m not talking about God. I’m not talking about religion. I’m talking about the spirit of money.

When you have money, it is easier to get money. When you’re broke, it is hard to get money. It’s hard to keep money.This is a challenge today. Start a savings account. Every week, you’re going to put another dollar in. Just keep doing that. You’ll be amazed how that will start attracting money in your life. Look at the billionaires in the world like Bill Gates, the Zuckerbergs, and Steve Jobs. They have one thing in common. They have all created businesses that serve a lot of people. You cannot make a lot of money ethically, without serving a lot of people. When I did my course, 30 Days to $2500, it was for free at first on YouTube. The only thing you had to do was to show up between 4 and 5pm every day for 30 days. It went over very well.

It’s a course that helps people make money. It’s about creation and upping your activity. Typically, if you have a business and you’re not making enough money, you have two problems.

  1. Your service level is poor
  2. Your activity level is poor

30 Days to $2500 teaches you how to “up” that.

My activity level is bananas right now. I’m putting out products like crazy. I’m not even close to where I want to be. I’m in product creation mode, which means I am increasing my service. I have products that you’re not going to buy and she’s not going to buy. But this person or that person will. I’m totally changing my business model, which was more of a high-end model. Who am I going to serve? Am I going to serve one segment that makes $300K to $1 million. I can. That’s a small segment. There’s only going to be so many people. Then there’s this other broad spectrum of folks that are about to get fucked. That is the working man, because jobs as we know it are over.

In five years, 50 % of you are going to be doing what I am doing. You’re going to be a freelancer or self-employed. 30 Days to $2500 is a course to teach you how to do that.

About saving money, always say I am saving for a sunny day, not a rainy day. You talk to yourself all the time and 80 % of it is negative. This is a cool thing. If you can reduce that negative self-talk by 5 or 10 percent, that could yield billions of dollars. Start meditating. Start introducing positive self-talk into your subconscious. That will change the whole game for you. In your mind, see money as a candle. Money is the fire in the candle. When somebody wants some of your fire, what can they do? They light their candle with your fire. You still have fire and now they have fire too.

There’s this thing. I call it the Layoff Monster. To give you a better idea of what I’m talking about, I’ll share my experience with you. There was a period of time that happened in 18 months where I got laid off three times. Every six months, it was like clockwork. It was like…” Hey, we don’t need your ass.” It’s not a good feeling. The third time, that was at Powertel. Two weeks before I was laid off, I was “Salesman of the Month.” My numbers were great.

Before I went off into a business on my own, I was a company man. I’d go to work and work hard. I’d do what was required and climb the ladder. I was doing that corporate thing. For a long time, I was happy to do that.

Every job I had except for the last three, I was the guy who got extra favors. I was looked out for. I actually quit a job once and when I wanted to come back, they created a position for me to come back part-time. I was that kind of employee.Yep. I was “Salesman of the Month” and I got called in. I believe something in me snapped. We’re taught that if you do the right thing and you do good things, that you will get good things in return. You know, you will reap what you sow.In that 18-month period, that was not necessarily the case. I’m not a very religious person. I’m a spiritual person. I do believe in God. But I don’t believe in religion.

I never subscribed to the philosophy that God’s got something better in store for me. That never resonated with me at all.That third time I got laid off, I decided I had to do something different. I figured if I continued to do the same things and expected to yield different results, that I’d end up in the looney bin. When he told me I was laid off that third time, a shift happened at that moment. I became that guy that decided to get over it and explore opportunities for me. I’ve never gone back.

When I was sitting there thinking, and all of these things went through my mind, I became Jewish.I used to have a Jewish roommate, Derek. We’d sit around and talk about a lot of things. We decided that not chasing knowledge and new experiences really fucks up a lot of people. Supposedly, there’s this rift between Jewish people and black people. I’m not part of it. If I really look at it, black people can learn a lot from Jews.Jews were slaves for thousands of years. They figured out the only way to not be hunted down and shot or put into camps was to become an integral part of society. Derek told me, the thinking was…” We’re going to become the lawyers, the doctors and the bankers. You may not like us, but you’re going to need us.”

So, they became a powerful group. That’s a lesson anybody can learn from.

At that moment, in that chair being laid off, I became Jewish. I swore to myself that this shit’s never going to happen to me again. It was a conscious decision, and it was an active decision.It’s taken me a long time to piece it together because I didn’t study the right stuff to learn how to articulate what happened. I was just sitting there thinking…never fucking again is this going to happen to me. Never again would I give my all and be put in the position where they can say, thanks, but no thanks, you go away.Let’s talk about the indoctrination of the American worker. This is one of the reasons you feel so bad when the layoff monster hits you. From birth, you are indoctrinated to be a worker. When I told my mother I was an entrepreneur, she said…”What you’re trying to tell me is you still don’t have a job.” My mother grew up in that era when you were no one if you didn’t have a job.

This mindset starts with our school system. The school system was designed to create workers for the assembly line.

That’s why you feel so bad when you don’t have a job. You are an outlier. You feel like you’re a worthless member of society. Who wouldn’t feel bad with that kind of weight hanging on their shoulders?Then, when you add in the fact that you don’t have any money coming in, then you have a financial calamity. People have lost their marriages, their homes, their cars due to layoffs. Getting laid off is a monster that touches every part of your life. We’re not taught how to create an existence outside of a job. People say starting a business is risky. But you get a job created by some person who started a business. It puzzles me. People don’t think. They just react.

When I was sitting there in that chair off Peachtree Road in downtown Atlanta, I made a real strong, active and positive decision with a ton of emotion behind it. When you make a decision with a lot of energy behind it and it’s a good decision, good things happen.I always had a side hustle, but I never made the full commitment to become an entrepreneur until I couldn’t take it anymore. In that chair after being laid off, I decided I would be in full control of my destiny, for the good and the bad. I made that decision in nanoseconds. In two and a half to three years, I had my own business. That was my first business that I had that was my sole source of income. It was either sink or swim.

I think you should meditate. It’s a tool for the mind. Google transcendental meditation. Meditation is like cleaning your mind. It helps you organize your thoughts.

When you are laid off, you have to reclaim your self-esteem. Take action. One of the reasons I did not crack up after my third layoff is because I took copious amounts of action. It worked out very well.Definitely, don’t give up on yourself. What happens is people begin to believe they don’t have the ability to do more. They begin to think it’s not in the cards for them.Start a business. I don’t care what it is. It will keep the negative emotions at bay. Set goals for yourself.

I’m going to teach you how to develop sustainable passive income. Now, what I didn’t say was it would be easy.

Right now, we’re looking at DC Comics. This is a conversation I had in writer’s groups I frequented. I understood many people weren’t getting it. I was writing “How To” books and they were writing fiction. They were like…” How can we get some marketing with fiction?”I said…” You’ve heard of Spiderman, right? Heard of the Flash? You’ve seen the t-shirts. You’ve seen the figurines, right? Well, all of those guys are fiction and fantasy.At DC Comics, they’ve got a lot of stuff going on. They’ve got the characters, the comics, the movies, the TV and the games.

All of this stuff is licensed out to other people. They ask DC Comics… “May I be a licensed merchandiser?” They’ll answer with… “We like what you are doing. We are going to approve you to be a licensed merchandiser.”

It’s called passive income.

Green Lantern. Superman. Batman. These comic book characters are decades old.

How old is Superman? He was created in June 1938.

Someone has been making money licensing out his image, his name, his costume for decades.

Let’s go to another one. Disney. Walt Disney. How old is Mickey Mouse? He’s older than Superman. Disney licenses out Mickey Mouse and they get royalties. That’s passive income. For a long time, Nike didn’t own any factories. They were a licensing company, a marketing company. They didn’t make shoes. They marketed the logo. Somebody else did the heavy lifting. They got passive income to the tune of billions. Michael Jordan makes $90 million a year from his licensing, passive income from the Air Jordan brand. He makes more money now than he did when he was playing.

Now this is one of my mentors. I used to work at Northside Hospital and Curtis Mayfield was one of my patients. I used to see him all the time. The man schooled me in passive income, licensing, and royalties. He was giving me gold. He was 90% paralyzed and supporting his family off of his passive income.

You need to learn how to create something.

Everybody is trying to get rich off of other people’s stuff.I have the right to do whatever I want with my intellectual property because it’s mine. Now, Milo is very popular. This is a character. Very simple. Baby Milo was created. All of this stuff is licensing and merchandise. The company doesn’t make all this stuff. They license out the rights and get a percentage. That’s durable passive income.

You know what Hello Kitty is. You’ve seen it, right? Hello Kitty is a $2 Billion per year brand. They don’t make any of this stuff. They license it out. Do you understand where I am going with this?

The surest road to sustainable and durable passive income is to create something that does not exist or to make something that does exist much better and put your brand on it. That’s how you develop passive income.

You’ve heard of the Super Soaker. If you are of a certain age, you probably have one. It was invented by Lonnie Johnson 20-25 years ago. He’s made over $100 million in passive income by licensing it to Hasbro Mattel.

Well done Lonnie. He’s one of my mentors.

The path to sustainable passive income is to create something, not to use someone else’s stuff. Think of it this way, the next ten years is going to pass whether you do anything or not. So, you might struggle to build something for two or three years, then in ten years you are a millionaire. That’s how you do it. Not with all this quick, hurry up, I’ve got to have my money now. You sound like a bitch. Real adults build things.

Once you’ve made your money, then you park it somewhere. My investment was in me and my business. Let’s just be real. If you get $50 million. What do you do? You’re going to have to pay your capital gains taxes.I’ll give you my scenario. This is what I like to do for fun. If I won the lottery, there’s a scenario for each level of income… $10 million, $20 million, $50 million, and $100 million.

For the sake of this video, let’s just say I got $50 million. Let’s say taxes are paid and $50 million is left.  I would take $5 million and put it in my personal bank account. Then I would take $45 million and buy as much class A commercial property as I could get my hands on.I’m not going to manage it. We’re talking 7 figures a year passive income. This is how you get true and sustainable passive income.

I’m going to tell you my passive income story.

In less than eight years, I made $3 million income from my book, Making Money A-Z with Self Storage Unit Auction and my courses. When the most money was coming in, I was doing absolutely nothing. I would wake-up with $1500 to $3,000 in my account every day. This went on for about three years.

How did I get there? I went out and hustled my ass off and started doing stuff in the storage auction business that no one else was doing. Then, when I got out, I sold this book about it, this intellectual property. Do you understand how this works now?

Create your own dreams. Put your best foot forward. Put your soul into something.

Look this cat up. Buy these books. The Effective Executive. Get everything by Peter Drucker and by Edward Deming. These books will help you build real businesses. They’re old. But this shit works. Not me.I’ve got no college, no fancy degree, just drive and will power. I wasn’t looking to do that. It was just destiny. I do believe you create your own destiny.I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I was where some of you are. I am someone who came from very meager circumstances and did well.I’m in the gym quite a bit. There are people who walk around with big calves. I saw this guy with good calf development and the dude showed me a picture of the little twigs he used to have.

I was, okay, I’m listening. Following his routine, my calves are close to 18 inches.I’ve even gotten whistled at. They are way bigger than they used to be, because I got the right information. That’s what this is going to be about for you. I learned everything from trial and error, making it happen.

You can do the same thing.

It’s going to take effort, blood, sweat and tears. People don’t want to hear that. People are looking for magic jelly beans.For most people, if they could do these things, they’d be happy….have a house paid for before they’re 40, the car they want to be paid off and about 50K in the bank with no personal debt. People living like that are considered rich now. Why? Because they don’t have a lot of issues stressing them out. The world’s about to change. You’ve got to take that first step transitioning from an employee to a business owner. You can start a business.When you use the word “business” around people, they think of a huge skyscraper and pretty secretaries and a car service. That’s part of business for some companies.

But for everyone else, your business is you.

There are many people held up, imprisoned by their own mind. “I can’t start a business because I’m not special enough. I’m no smart enough. I’m not pretty enough. I haven’t got special connections. I’ve got bad credit and can’t go to the bank to get a business loan.Conundrum Publishing  ( Now Mack Daddy Media) was started with $289 without a capital reinvestment for damn near 20 months. So, if you think you need a whole lot of cash to start a business, you’re wrong.  You need hustle. You need drive.

All the opportunity you want is right before you right now. You can’t see it because you don’t believe it.

Part of starting a business is you’re going to make mistakes. You’re going to make a lot of them. If you make a ton of mistakes really fast, you increase your knowledge base really fast. Then you can make better decisions to move your business forward. It’s going to take time. You have to pay your dues. I believe that is the biggest barrier to people starting a business. You can start your business in a month or it could take ten years. I don’t know.What I do know is if you start working your ass off and you have a goal and a strategy, amazing things can happen.

The world has changed. Many people don’t believe it. If you read a lot, are a student of history, then you know that.

I want you to check out this book – Race Against the Machine. It’s from 2011. These guys actually study what is happening with jobs. Many of the things they talked about have happened and will continue to happen.Because we are at this apex of innovation and access.If you will hold up your iPhone, Android or whatever you have, that phone has more processing power than your first computer, if you were like me and bought it in 1997. This phone can do way more than that computer that you spent thousands on in the 90s.

Your phone can do movies. Your first computer couldn’t make movies. Your phone searches the internet faster.

I mention this, to compare and contrast and to show how fast we’re moving. In five years, you’ll have people running businesses from their phone. Now, if you are someone that embraces technology every day when you get up, you’re doing your happy dance. These are great times for you. But if you are a person who doesn’t read and doesn’t like technology and doesn’t want to study, you are screwed.We have a new problem. This whole recession, recovery thing is being exposed. Unemployment is creeping back up. You want to know why? There’s no economic drivers, such as housing.

Essentially, unemployment is going up and if true unemployment was factored in, I’d say it is roughly 20% across the board.

College graduates do have a lower unemployment rate. It’s true. It’s because they are taking jobs that high school graduates used to do. If I own a Starbucks, I’m like, “Come on in. Here’s your apron and time card. That’s why the employment rate for college graduates is higher. If you’re getting a degree that can’t give you the skill sets and the ability to pay back your student loans, you are Boo Boo the fool. College used to work. Certain career fields still work. Typically, you want to get into something rigorous and challenging. Prepare to quit your job. Prepare to be fired. Essentially, it’s coming. Something very big; something very powerful is coming. It’s a power shift. By 2020, 40% to 50% of people are going to be freelancers. Years ago, when the Pilgrims came to America, they were essentially self-employed. They had to make their own clothes, their own food and booze. They had to make everything.

And with that comes a certain level of independence, a certain level of ruggedness, a certain level of autonomy.

So, essentially, you can prepare to quit your job or be unprepared and flat footed like I was way back when, when I got laid off for the third time. All of a sudden, you have to scramble to summon the forces of the universe to come to your aid. It lit a fire under my ass. I didn’t have any money in the bank. I didn’t have a job. I was living in a boarding house. I had reached a point where I couldn’t do this anymore. Something has to change. And the only thing in the equation I can change is me.

And I changed me.

And in six weeks, I was living in a house with levels. I was working a job.You have to be prepared to be fired. You’re going to have major corporations with fewer employees. That’s the power of technology; that’s the power of automation and outsourcing. So, if you’re looking for a job, you are just “Roadkill Rob.” Jobs are going the way of the dinosaurs.

So, you have the choice. You can be the pimp or the whore. Hunt or be hunted.

Forget all the noise you’ve heard about starting a business. Until you make your first dollar, you’re not a business. You are better off working from your home until you have cash to ramp up and move your business forward. One of the things we’re going to do with Hustler’s University now  ( Hustler;s Kung Fu Lifeskills)  is hold you accountable. You can build a strong business model in a year.

I’m talking about recent events and how you can deal with the craziness besieging America. Racism is a byproduct for the fight for economics and resources. We’ve got a lot of problems going on in this country. We’re being pushed back to the Stone Ages.

If you’re a business person, focus 100 % on your business. Don’t worry about this stuff. I limit my Facebook fuckery. Align yourself with your audience, your marketplace to the point that when they twitch, you know about it.

The secret sauce in these videos is “Do the Work.”

Pick up your phone and call your customers. Nobody does that.

It is amazing how many people are freaking out now. You have to be focused on your business. If you focus on your business, you will make money.

90 % of business is done offline. You’re going to make money if you serve your customer.

Without the legal structure of an LLC or Corporation, all your personal assets are at risk.

Focus really really hard.

Let’s go back to 2009. We were in a recession. It was the worst recession in history, since the Great Depression. But I thrived. Why? Because I told customers how to make money.

I recommend that you don’t watch the news, but that you read it. Why? Because the print spin is easier to manage.

When there is fuckery, there is money in it.

There was respect for the presidency until Obama. Then it all changed. When you are in Crazy land, Crazy land laws govern.

Like being honorable with someone who is not honorable can cost you your life.

If you’re on your game, you can make so much money.

Question: What kind of focus should I have when the house is burning down?

Answer: First, get out of the burning house. Focus on things that make you money. Let’s say you’re doing Internet Marketing. Forget Facebook. Create a direct response marketing mechanism. You put out content and send it to people. They respond. It’s the quickest way to make money.

Parts of the house are burning down. We do have fires all over the place. Let’s be clear. The country is not in flames yet. This isn’t about racism, although it’s part of it. It’s about a dictatorship. A dictator says if you’re with me you’re cool, if you’re not with me, off with your head. We’re a long way from that.

But seeds are being planted and people are ignoring them. As a business owner, when you have some success, you get to choose a better neighborhood, and choose a better opportunity. Your circle of friends changes. To a degree, you’ll be insulated from all the bullshit.

If you’re the average person barely making it or you have parents on Medicaid, they’re going to get crushed. At some point, you’re going to need money. You’re going to need to prepare yourself. The more money you have, the less this stuff is going to bother you, unless you’re an immigrant. There is a lot of backlash against successful immigrants, because people think they don’t work hard. Some ignorant people think they were given secret government loans.

It’s crazy. These people risk their life to come here. They pool their money to help each other start businesses.

When you allow this level of racism and bigotry and xenophobia, it’s going to get worse and spread. Crazy stuff!

Job security is a myth for real.

Here’s my thing. If you serve your community well and you don’t take advantage of people, push it  as hard as you can.

Statistically, when poverty goes up, crime goes up. They are closely correlated. If you have to steal something to feed your kid, you’re going to do it. It doesn’t make it right. But it will happen.

Question: What are your thoughts of being a real estate agent in this economy?

Answer: Just do it. There are pockets of wealth in certain neighborhoods. They’re building million dollar homes “on spec.” They have enough confidence to build these homes without a buyer lined up. They build it and have it sitting until it sells. There are several million dollar properties in the Atlanta area now.

Question: In just a few days, Trump has destroyed the US reputation. Do you think we will recover?

Answer: It takes a lot of time to build a reputation, but you can destroy a reputation overnight. We already had a problem because we kept the war going on. Like football teams that talk shit about the opposing team before the game. You get people amped up and angry. It’s bad shit. They think, fuck you, I’m going to win.

Part of it is we have the largest military, the largest Air Force in the world. We have more nukes than everybody. That is not the country I grew up in. We had treaties. We had talks. Up until this fool, all of our presidents were somewhat presidential. Some more than others. This guy is not presidential at all. He’s like a child in a sandbox and he wants all the toys. He is disgusting and disturbing.

Question: What free materials do you have to focus?

Answer: Watch a Hustler Kung Fu video every day. I used to listen to Lead the Field Every Day. I listened to it in the background. You can get the CDs on Amazon or EBay. I was programming my mind for success, while ignoring the BS. Limit your time for fuckery and keep focused.

Question: How do you stay consistent?

Answer: You have to have a purpose. Your stuff has to be written down on paper. You need a Big Ass whiteboard so you see that stuff. Do actions that take you there.

Question: What are your thoughts of selling t-shits online?

Answer: Forget the t-shirts. Find your audience and find a marketplace. Find out what someone is not giving them and they want. Then, give it to them. It’s about the audience. Audience is King and Queen.

Question: How can someone run a business part-time when your full-time job stresses you out?

Answer: You have to make a decision. Is your business or your comfort the most important thing? You might need to get a night job. You might need to move in with some folks. Your actions dictate what’s most important to you. You’ve got choices to make.

Question: Can being too comfortable with your life be dangerous?

Answer: Yes. Yes. Hell, to the Yes. When you get too comfortable, you may stop living. You may stop striving and may stop building. You may cease to exist as an interesting person.

Question: What keeps you sane?

Answer: Meditation. I work out. Good friends. I cut back on the number of projects I’m working on. I’m doing stuff that makes me giggle, makes me happy.

Answer: If he doesn’t pull out something bad is going to happen. If he doesn’t leave his companies, he’s going to get impeached. He’s still running the companies. That stuff is illegal.
