How to Make Money as an Online Consultant, Mentor, Trainer and Teacher

There’s a lot of stuff on the internet about people who teach people to make money or people who mentor folks on how to make money. There’s not a lot of stuff online about how to become one of those highly paid people. That’s what we’re going to talk about here today.

The first step to becoming a highly paid mentor or trainer is you pick your clients. This is key for your success and happiness. They don’t pick you. I’m going to break it down for you. If you have a process that works and benefits people that you can repeat, duplicate and teach people how to do, you’re an effective trainer.

Now, the big debate will be about what you want to charge. Are your services worth what you’re charging? If you can teach a person to lift a barbell or throw a ball, you’ve got skills worth teaching. You’re a trainer. Some of the most highly paid trainers are athletic trainers.

Let’s talk about the money. This is where everyone seems to have an opinion. If everyone is going on and on about how teachers, trainers, and mentors do not have a real business, then more than likely they want to do the same thing, but they don’t have the courage and the talent, or they have tried and failed. While some people give away great content for free, that is a personal decision and choice.

Anytime you can help someone go from one place to another and improve their life, that’s an amazing thing. That’s a worthy occupation. If you want to be a trainer, go for it.

Let’s jump into the core of becoming a trainer. You have to know what you’re talking about. That is job #1.

I’ve got 20,000 hours invested in YouTube learning and putting up videos over the last seven years. I have even more hours invested in running a physical products store and business. You’ve got to put the time in. If you are going to mentor someone, you should be able to get great results for yourself first before you start teaching other people how to do it.

There are people who can teach an executive. Let’s say you are an executive who built a company and you’re making $10 million a year. Then you hire someone and you’re paying them $50K a year and they can help you make another $2 or $3 million, but they don’t personally make $10 million per year. That is common, depending on the industry and what you do. Your employers who help you make millions don’t make as much as the hiring business owners do typically.

This notion that any consultant or mentor must make as much money as you do to help you is a misnomer. It’s false. It’s what I call poor people politics. Everyone who is poor has these assumptions about how rich people live and spend their money.

You can’t have what you hate. All of this hate aimed at the rich is keeping you from having more money. This whole idea of the millionaire next door is just to make you feel better about your low expectations. Get over it. Raise your expectations.

You’re not going to save your way to wealth. You may invest your way to wealth, but you aren’t going to save your way to wealth. Let that fantasy go.

You’ve got to be super strong with your craft. You’ve got to be super knowledgeable in the subject matter you plan to teach as a mentor. More than likely, it’s going to take a few years for you to get to that level of expertise. That’s just reality.

You can start now and you can develop a great base of knowledge in six months to a year. Then you can start to charge and train people from that base. In the beginning, you will not be able to get the big bucks. That will take time.

This is what I know about business. Once your talent level is truly earned and you’ve built it up, it’s very hard to tear it apart. I’ll give you an example. I’ve had trolls since day one on YouTube. I’ve had people doing all kinds of crazy stuff, spreading lies, going in the forums and saying all of this crazy stuff.

At one point, I made the mistake of responding to them. Then I said “Fuck it. I’m going to do me.” I kept going. Recently I looked up a lot of the trolls and most of them are gone. I invested in getting better. They invested in becoming worse.

Where you spend your time is where you will shine. After all of the attacks and bullshit, I’m still here. I grew. I’ve grown significantly. The channel is probably going to get 20K new subscribers this year.

Another thing you have to do is spend money on training. You didn’t expect that, did you? You need to spend some money and master the art of training and mentoring.

If you’ve been a powerlifter in Georgia, you know about the Coffee Gym. Coffee’s been around forever. John Coffee doesn’t look like the incredible hulk. But, John Coffee can train your ass to greatness. He’s a great trainer. This whole notion that you have to look a certain way or be a certain way to train someone is bullshit.

Start investing in training. This is typically where most people struggle. You need the subject expertise and you also need the expertise about how to create courses.

One of the problems I had at first was that I was accepting customers, but I wasn’t picking them. Once I started picking customers, everything changed.

Understand, if you want to make a lot of money in consulting and training you can. But there’s a price. There’s a few things you need to do. The first question you need to ask yourself and be honest about is, would you hire yourself. If you pause and have to think about that, then you have your answer.

You have to create excellence first in your craft and then become a mentor, a coach, a teacher or a trainer.
