People ask me this question all the time. They want to know how to stay committed for the long haul. One of the things I’ve observed over my years of doing business, is that people give up too easy. When you give up, everything that you learn goes to the side because you stop doing it.
I had a really interesting conversation with a friend. She has a cookie business. She is one of the few people who listened to me. She is probably going to get that cookie business up to 6-figures within three to five years.
What if you make love to your business very slowly instead of pushing so hard in the beginning. You court your business. That way you don’t burn out. That is what happens to many people. They try and make a lot of money so fast that they burn out. You have to learn how to stay committed without burning out and giving up.
What helps you stay committed is immediate goals, long-term goals and short-term goals. You need three sets of goals. Also, you have to do this. You’ve got to relax. This is one of the reasons that if your life is fine, and you’ve got all the money you need, then that’s the perfect time to start your business. That takes some of the pressure off, because you’re not pressed for money.
My first five businesses were started when I was in the military. I learned a lot while I still had steady income. Build your business while you have a job and income or at least get yourself out of debt. Today, you don’t have to spend an enormous amount of money to start a business. Conundrum Publishing was started with $285. I didn’t put any more money back in the business. From the beginning, the business put money into the business.
The business was able to support itself as well as me. You can do the same thing. Let’s go back to my friend with the cookie business. I told her to let the profits stack for a while and not to take money out of the business.
Put the money in your business account. Build it up. Then when you have $10K, $20K or more, then maybe you can expand. At this point, many people would quit their job and go into their business full-time. When people asked me if they should quit their job, “I say, no.” It’s not because they don’t have talent. It’s because they have no fucking experience. That is the big problem.
If you stay committed for the long haul with your immediate goals, the short-term goals and the long-term goals, checking things off the list, you begin to see traction. You begin to feel the results. It’s a beautiful thing.
Part of the reason it is hard for people to stay committed for the long haul is because they are doing this: they have a little money they’ve earned and they spend it. Too many entrepreneurs are trying to live off the business before the business can walk.
Imagine that your business is a baby. No matter how bad you want that baby to walk, the baby is going to crawl until it learns to walk. It’s the same for your business. Until enough revenue comes in and you get enough experience, it’s not walking. It’s just not happening. That’s usually going to take many months to a year.
The good news is that it used to take three to five years for your business to spin off enough profit. You can do this in a year now. For many people, they still think that’s too long. People think they need this to happen next week because they need to get that new Porsche. That’s not the way it works unless you have rich parents. Most of us have to work for it.
Nothing is going to happen without commitment. It is better to go forward and fail, then to allow people to dissuade you from moving forward. You need to test things for yourself to know for sure what will work.
Do you want to be 70 or 80 years old sitting on your front porch looking out at the grass wondering what your life could have been if you had stayed committed to something long enough for it to bear fruit?” I’ve seen people for years trying one thing after another, but who never commit long-term to anything. You are never going to do anything substantial like that. You can’t continue to chase the latest thing without committing to something if you want to succeed. You have to stay focused.
I hated this YouTube thing in the beginning. But, it worked. I didn’t like doing YouTube, but I liked the results. In time, I began to like it and make it my own.
You’ve got to know what you want. This is critical. If you don’t know what you want, you’ve got to try as much shit as possible.
You have to decide what type of life you want to have. How do you want to live? How do you want to enjoy your days? Very few people ask these questions.
Work, effort and sacrifice are necessary to get ahead in your own business. Many people are looking to earn a million dollars with a minimum wage effort.
People say we need a minimum wage. I don’t think so. I don’t want minimum wage. Nobody should want that for themselves. If for some reason you are forced to take a minimum wage job, your first goal once you get it should be how to get out of it. That’s your next step because the price of necessities like food keep going up. Minimum wage is never enough.
You must stay committed for the long-term. You have to set immediate goals, short-term goals and long-term goals. These goals must be written down. You should look at them every day. Then create execution steps. As long as you’re moving forward, you’re okay.
